The chalk pit had been filled to a depth of some 4.5m with excavated clay from numerous sources and left with a steep embankment to two sides and a large highway settlement pond to a third.
Following consideration of a number of ground improvement and foundation techniques, it was decided to adopt the Landpak high energy dynamic consolidation system.
Subsequent dummy foundation tests taken at founding level, consisted of plate bearing tests on a 2 sq.m plate and CBR testing, justified the technique. The steel framed one and two storey buildings were erected using traditional pad foundations and ground bearing slabs. This showed significant savings over the piling solutions originally recommended by the ground investigation.
