These two methods of construction were adopted to provide the minimum structural zone, essential to keep the height of the building within planning requirements and also provide the shortest construction period.
The hotel incorporates a function room 20m x 20m over which is situated the plant room, housing all the tanks and handling equipment required to service a 5* hotel. It was a basic requirement that the function room should be a clear open area and the plant room construction was designed as a series of storey height steel verendeel trusses which spans the full width of the facility and supports a sound insulated insitu concrete floor.
A particular feature of the elevations is the glass atrium which extends the full 7 storey height of the building. The glazing is supported by a main vertical steel tubular truss, which supports horizontal secondary members formed from a combination of steel trusses and stainless steel wires. The overall structure has a light appearance and was designed to provide the minimum obstruction to the passage of light through the glazed elevation.
