The site was underlain by substantial mine workings and overlain by up to 4m of contaminated made ground including massive un-plotted reinforced concrete basements and tunnels.
The design required the use of long span flat roof structures to provide a column free trading area. Following contamination remediation, foundation works were a combination of grouting mine workings and tunnels supplemented by vibro consolidation of the made ground.
Phase 2 of the development is expected to commence during 2007.
